Some projects come with a clear vision. The space itself communicates its needs, and the client knows exactly what they want. In these cases, our work focuses on precision rather than invention.

La Cour des Artistes in Antibes, French Riviera, was one such project. Philippe, the restaurateur, collaborated with us from the first conversation to the final specifications. He ensured that every decision honored the essence of the space.

The Venue

La Cour des Artistes is more than just a bar. It’s a cocktail lounge and evening gathering spot nestled in the old town of Antibes. The venue boasts terracotta plaster walls, a gallery of mismatched vintage mirrors framed in gold, and wine barrels repurposed as furniture. Coral and cobalt bar stools add a pop of color, while oil paintings lean against textured surfaces. The terrace fills with a lively crowd every night, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Generic lighting would have flattened this unique space. Instead, we aimed to enhance its character.

The Commission

Philippe approached us with a request for five custom ceramic pendant designs. These were not mere adaptations of existing styles. He wanted silhouettes, dimensions, and finishes tailored specifically for their intended locations.

This type of commission excites us. The constraints are real, and every decision holds weight. The outcome either fits seamlessly or it doesn’t. There’s no middle ground.

Over the Bar: The Custom Bar Series

Three pendants hang gracefully above the main bar counter. Behind them, a full wall of backlit spirits shelving complements a professional espresso machine. The lighting in this area needed to be warm and inviting, enhancing the bar's theatrical ambiance without overshadowing it.

We selected three pieces from what we call the Custom Bar Series. Each is finished in a warm clay tone, harmonizing beautifully with the room's amber and terracotta palette. These lamps provide a grounded presence, while one introduces a narrower, more vertical form. The third piece adds a unique silhouette to the grouping, keeping the eye engaged without creating visual clutter.

Philippe worked closely with us through multiple rounds of adjustments. The final sizes were not standard; they were determined by considering the specific ceiling height, bar counter depth, and the scale of the shelving wall behind. We asked ourselves what would feel right in that exact position.

At the Centre: The Black Pendants

The two black ceramic pendants tell a different story.

They hang at the center of the restaurant, suspended at varied heights. This design choice places them at eye level as guests approach from outside. Before entering, patrons catch a glimpse of these pendants glowing in the dark interior. They serve as the first impression of the entire space.

The use of black in such a warm room creates a striking contrast. It anchors the center of the restaurant, providing a visual focal point. This thoughtful design signals that every detail has been carefully considered. Philippe was clear about this vision from the outset, and the final pieces reflect that confidence.

On Dimension and Customization

One of the standout features of ceramic lighting is its flexibility. The form remains malleable until it is fired. This means we can adjust dimensions, shift proportions, and tailor scale to meet specific spatial needs, all without incurring tooling costs or minimum order quantities.

Philippe fully embraced this opportunity. Across all five pieces, dimensions were revised multiple times as the installation planning became more precise. The final pendants are not standard sizes; they are custom sizes that work perfectly for La Cour des Artistes. This iterative process is something most lighting suppliers simply cannot offer.

The Result

The bar glows warmly. The center of the restaurant feels anchored. The street outside beckons passersby before they even decide to enter.

That’s the magic of our custom ceramic pendants. When the brief is taken seriously and the collaboration runs deep, the results can be transformative.

La lumière fait tout. The light makes everything.
